Any loss of lens clarity is referred to as a cataract. The lens in the eye gradually becomes cloudy which blocks light entering the eye resulting in a loss of vision.

Cataracts are part of a natural ageing process and are evident to some degree in most people in their 60’s and beyond.

The most common cause of cataract is ageing. Other causes of cataract include diabetes, prolonged usage of steroids and ocular inflammations such as uveitis and trauma.

There are many studies that also suggest that smoking and sunlight are contributing factors to cataract formation.

When sight begins to deteriorate due to cataracts, vision may be improved with an update of your spectacle prescription or contact lenses. In the early stages of cataract formation, surgery is not usually indicated.  In more advanced cases where vision loss is extensive, cataract surgery is indicated. Surgery is usually indicated when a patient’s everyday activities and quality of life are being affected. Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision.

Max Astri Optometrists has specialised equipment required to detect cataracts, manage your vision prior to surgery and refer you to an appropriate cataract surgeon when indicated.
