The macular is the central and most sensitive part of the retina at the back of the eye. Macular pigment acts as an anti-oxidant and protects the retina from the potentially damaging effects of blue light. If the density of this pigment is reduced then the retina is more vulnerable to developing age related macular degeneration.
The MPOD Densitometer can detect low levels of macular pigment which can be indicative of early vision loss associated with age-related macular degeneration.
People with macular degeneration experience severely distorted vision and find to very hard to read and recognise faces. Eventually the condition can lead to total blindness.
A MPOD macular screening assessment is non invasive and takes less than 10 minutes to perform.
